Garden Decking caring tips from Garden Designer London

1. Pick the right day – Decking care should be done in the dry, so don’t wait too long. Very soon dry days will be far and few between.
2. Brush the surface – Lift any objects and place them away from the deck. Brush the surface using a soft bristle brush. At this point take the time to inspect the decking boards for any splitting, decay and rot. These should be repaired as soon as possible.
3. Jet wash the surface – If you own one or you are able to borrow a jet wash use it. Make sure to keep distance of at least 4 away from the surface and use below 1500psi of pressure. If you notice stains from oil, grease or food, move to step 4, otherwise jump to step 5.
4. Use soda crystals to remove stains – This simple trick really does work well. Spray soda crystals on the area and allow drying. Wash away using mild soap and hot water.
5. Oil the deck – Decking oil is essential to keep dirt from the microscopic cells of the wood. Application should be done using a soft-haired paintbrush with the most minimal amount of oil possible. Repeat the process twice more for even better results.
6. Care in winter – The area is often covered in snow and ice in the winter. If the application of the decking oil was done correctly, these won’t damage the wood. If you do decide to remove ice and snow to make the area less slippery, please do not use a metal snow shovel. Instead use salt and a plastic snow shovel.
